Footprint in Pudong

On April 18, 1990, the central government decided to open and develop Pudong. The survey and design market in Shanghai was further opened and design institutions from Japan, US, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan came to Shanghai one after another for business; meanwhile, survey and design institutes from other provinces and cities also flooded in. Then the development of urban construction and fixed asset investment in Shanghai kept a high-speed momentum. The “Two Institutes” seized the opportunity and threw themselves into domestic and overseas project cooperation actively.

The East China Institute won the bid of the first financial institution-Yindu Mansion in Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone in 1991. Pudong branches of the “Two Institutes” were established.

In 1994, engineering design scheme of Pudong Jinmao Tower was laid down, in which, the Shanghai Institute was the consulting designer and the East China Institute was the consulting design supervisor. The tower that was 420m in height, boasting 88 floors above ground and 3 under the ground was completed in 1998.

In 1995, the East China Institute won bids of consulting design of Pudong International Airport and Shanghai World Financial Center as well as a series of large and super large-scale construction engineering design projects. The Shanghai Institute worked with foreign partners on design projects such as Shanghai Pudong International Financial Center (today’s BOC Tower), Shanghai Information Building, Shanghai Stock Exchange Building, Shanghai Futures Building and China Merchants Tower; it also designed landmark buildings at the People’s Square, including Shanghai People's Building and Shanghai Museum.

Lujiazui from a distance, 1996

Development of Lujiazui started in 1990. After 20 years’ construction, it has become a world-renowned financial center symbolizing the booming economy in Shanghai; it is also one of the areas with most super high-rise buildings in the world. After Lujiazui took shape initially, the East China Institute completed many super high-rise buildings explosively. These projects diversify in both architectural and structural forms. Major types of today’s super high-rise building all can be seen here. Some projects have become classics in design technology and many technological achievements have enriched China’s design and construction regulation.
